Research others can build on
Training a language model is out of reach for many research groups. Studying one should not be. We release models alongside the materials researchers need to understand them, including training data, code, and checkpoints from throughout training.
Pythia makes it possible to study how models learn under controlled conditions. GPT-NeoX gives researchers the infrastructure to train models of their own. Maintaining and sharing these resources lets independent teams pursue questions they could not otherwise investigate.
“While other organizations have released open models, nobody designs their releases to empower scientific research better than EleutherAI. My lab fundamentally relies on access to things like training data and partially trained models to pursue our agenda of understanding why and how LLMs work. A way into research
Access to a model is only part of what a researcher needs. Through our community and the Summer of Open AI Research (SOAR), we connect aspiring researchers with mentorship, collaborators, and computing resources. Your support helps people develop the skills and experience to lead work of their own.

Independent questions, public research
We study how AI systems learn, how to evaluate them, and how to make open models safer. Our research agenda is chosen independently. We do not accept directed funding for work we did not already want to do.
Almost all of our work develops in public, in our Discord community. Researchers can follow projects as they take shape, contribute to them, and build on the results. Philanthropic support helps sustain this way of working, including work that has scientific value without an immediate commercial application.
